Rachel Li Diane (b. 2002, China) moved to the United States with her adoptive family in 2004. Her work explores self-portraiture, family relationships, and the divide that occurs when cultural identity and physical location don’t align. She resides in Cincinnati, OH, and studies Fine Arts at the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP).
My work is an exploration of my experience as a Chinese-American adoptee. I use photography and painting to document fabricated scenes of self-portraiture to share narratives about the isolation and misplacement of someone who lives within a minority community. Through this process, I aim to unpack the complexity of the ongoing invasion and discovery of self-identity to find a sense of ease and safety in an unfamiliar culture.
