about
the
artist
Rachel Li Diane (b. 2002, China) moved to the United States with her adoptive family in 2004. Her work explores self-portraiture, family relationships, and the divide that occurs when cultural identity and physical location don’t align. She resides in Cincinnati, OH, and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts with a minor in Fashion Studies from the University of Cincinnati's College of Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP).
My work is an exploration of my experience as a Chinese-American adoptee. I use photography and painting to document fabricated scenes of self-portraiture to share narratives about the isolation and misplacement of someone who lives within a minority community. Through this process, I aim to unpack the complexity of the ongoing invasion and discovery of self-identity to find a sense of ease and safety in an unfamiliar culture.
